The production of São Jorge Cheese extends throughout the island. We started in Rosais, formerly “Celeiro da Ilha”, an area of fertile agricultural fields, today transformed into pastures for milk production.
The visit to the old milk collection station, in the Núcleo Museológico dos Rosais – Ponta, allows you to observe some utensils used in the old cooperative.
From the Pico da Velha viewpoint, in the Parque Florestal das Sete Fontes, we can observe the immense green pastures that characterize the parish of Rosais. An excellent place for nature lovers, with several springs, small lakes and a huge diversity of plants, it is the ideal place for a short walk and even a picnic with the delicious São Jorge cheese. Along the route to the Rosais Lighthouse, we are surprised by the curiosity of the cows that graze there, and who greet us with their eyes.
We finish our tour with a cheese tasting at the O Branquinho restaurant. Here, we taste São Jorge cheese in its various ripenings, which provide us with a range of unique flavors and aromas, deliciously accompanied by regional wines.
